Photoshop Animation Techniques (Redux, Creative Cloud) from Alex Grigg on Vimeo. *Updated* Photoshop Animation Techniques A step by step introduction to animating in Photoshop Adobe Photoshop is a tool that a great number of creative minds are familiar and comfortable with. While it isnt software package that has been built with animation specifically in mind there it has huge potential as an animation tool. The ability to control an aesthetic within the software gives a very hands on feel to the process and endless possibilities for your end result. I hope that this tutorial will help bridge the gap between designer and animator, beginner and professional. Before you get started you’ll need a basic-intermediate understanding of Photoshop, as well as a copy of Photoshop CS6 extended or Creative Cloud The layout of the tutorial- Part 1 Getting Started- All the key features that you’ll need to know in order to get animation out of Photoshop. These include an introduction to the animation timeline as well as the steps you can follow to export your animation. Part 2 Clean-up, Colour and Creating Actions. A step by step walk through for creating some the actions that will help you speed up your animation workflow – including creating colour layers, effective bucket filling and creating your next frame. Part 3 Extra Tips and Tricks- A few extra tips and tricks to help you get started animating in Photoshop. These include using preexisting videos in your animation, better manipulating the timeline and how to export gifs from Photoshop.

Gumball for Cartoon Network

This is a collection of gifs that the fine folks at Cartoon Network commissioned me to make recently. It was so much fun playing with the world of Gumball. Ben Bocquelet and Mic Graves have created something really special there. Oh and Jacob Escobedo deserves a shout out too. He’s always pushing for fun stuff at CN HQ. The first 3 were animated by me and had a bit of clean up help from my buddy Jarrod Prince. The fourth piece was an anim colab with Ben Ommundson (I set up the gag and the design and and he delivered the punchline and finished everything off. It was a fun way to work!)

COLOSSE - Teaser Trailer from Chromosphere on Vimeo.
Colosse is the result of a VR Jam hosted by Oculus Rift.
The project was a 2 week collaboration between Kevin Dart, Eran Hilleli, Jasmin Lai, David Kamp, Nelson Boles, Daniel Sproll, Jasper Parker Trenfield, Nick Pittom and myself.
Because it was a jam we had a few way points that we had to hit. The trailer above was one of these waypoints and was made during the first week of production.

I animated the first scene, with help from Jasper Parker Trenfield on the Colosse. The second scene was animated by the phenomenal Nelson Boles.

The project went on to win a Gold prize, which was really nice! There is a really fun walkthrough on Youtube by eVRydayVR. Lead developer Nick Pittom has done some really insightful write ups on the process here- Part 1. Part 2.

Earlier this week the awesome crew at Fiverr asked me to join up and start selling my services for 5 dollars a pop! I think its about time I embraced the sharing economy, so go check out my new page. I’ll draw you a dick for 5 bucks. There are loads of upgrades too so be sure to customize your order if you feel that way inclined (the image above for example is a smiley face upgrade).

Thanks for all your support guys.

UPDATE.

I’m very sorry, but fiverr has banned my gig for some reason. I’m deeply sorry to all of my supporters, and a big thank you to the people who have already placed an order. All orders made thus far will be completed, but no more can be taken through fiverr. As a consolation, for the next 24 hours if you’d like a dick drawn for you, I’m willing to accept payments through the paypal button below. Email your orders to afgrigg@gmail.com and I’ll endeavour to complete your order within 7 days. my original ad on Fiverr was as follows.

I’m a professional artist and will deliver quality results for those on a modest budget. $5 gets you a single black and white drawing of a dick of my choosing.

I have some great additions too:
+$5 for High-Five upgrade!
+$5 for a smiley face upgrade!
+$5 to upgrade your dick to a duck!
+$5 to add rainbow colours to your dick!
+$5 to add rainbow colours to your background.

Update. All sales are now closed. The response was overwhelming. Thanks all for your support.

The super folk at Mighty Nice are developing Bottersnikes and Gumbles, the iconic children's books, into an animated series. I was so lucky to be involved.
I worked in the initial development phase, creating boards designs and animation for the proof of concept. The series goes into production 2013. For the piece above I did the initial boards and then shared layout and animation duties with Toby Pedersen

Bottersnikes and Gumbles Titles

.
Back in the 70's a couple of blokes (writer S. A. Wakefield and illustrator Desmond Digby) came up with a series of incredible Australian Bush fantasy books called Bottersnikes and Gumbles. The series were my favourite books growing up as a kid in the 90s. My dad found out of print copies during his time as a teacher librarian and took them home to read with me. When I was 7 we made a Bottersnike costume for book week. The photo below is of me in that costume, circa 1995 winning a our school dress up comp. Needless to say, when I first met up with Darren Price, founder and director at Mighty Nice and he told me he wanted to develop the books into animation I was more than a little excited.

Cut forward 4 years and Mighty Nice in collaboration with Cheeky Little have signed a deal with Netflix, BBC and Channel 7 to make a 52 episode TV series and they need a title sequence. It was an absolute blast to come up with this stylised opening for something that's held a place in my heart for such a long time. It was also so great to colaborate with an incredible roster of artists. Please check them out in the crew list below. They are all top shelf!
